Free Downloading - Legal or illegal?

Postby kevm67 » 20 Oct 2010 14:13

Im doing a uni project at the moment and my chosen topic is to discuss downloading music and should it, or should it no be criminalised

Now I know we have a lot of music lovers on here, and guys who dj

Can youse give me some thoughts on downloading music and do u think it should be legal or illegal and why

How many of youse download without paying for tunes (i know i do) and is this unfair to all the artists out there (probably) but should we really be asked to pay £1 for every song we want when their are so many good tunes out their or is that reasonable enough. Look at your tuneage collection if it has 1000 tunes that would be £1000 quid you would be out of pocket

Im looking for both sides of the coin here guys and thot this would be a good place to start

thanks in advance

First of all, please next time take a better title of just a few words.
It's easier and nicer to read, don't you think too?

Then On-topic:

I download all my tracks for free, so illegal. And sooometimes when I think it's a really massive tune, I buy it at Beatport or iTunes :) Ofcourse it's unfair to the producers, but like you already say, it costs too much to buy every tune you like. I don't have the money to buy all those tunes, and I'm very sorry .. but I don't have a better reason.

obviously is illegal, but for me is not inmoral. Paying 2'5$ for a track is way too much, and the money is not for the producer but usually for the store/label mainly, and some tracks simply doesn't have the quality and effort required, most of the stuff is released just because they've to release something, not because they consider is a beautiful piece of music.

So imo, f**k them, we pay their gigs.

Slightly offtopic: I believe(d) that paying 50+ euros for a PC game is really too much, and I didn't pay for all games I played before ;) Then I started to look at older games for about 5 euros a piece. Right now I only buy those discount offers, and occasionaly a new game for the full price if I really want it.
I guess that a lot of the illegal downloading is partly caused by the (too) high prices.
But on the other hand... a lot of people wouldn't do it legally if a track costed 10 cents...

I suppose that if you had 1000 tunes in your library, you haven't downloaded them all at once?
So you wouldn't exactly lose 1000 euros / dollars at once...

For DJing we buy all the tracks at the proper sites. Yes, it cost a lot of cash, and no we haven't quite gotten paid so much that we have gotten to the break-even point.
But if you are planning to get paid to do your DJ-ing job, it is just arrogant not to pay the people that have made it possible for you to do that job. Plus... you could get into a lot of trouble.

For just consumers... I just think that one day they will be checking out the pc's for illegal content.

here in spain works differently because the government assume we download illegaly so they charge a fee to all clubs depending on size and other factors, that's why the money you get for djing is quite low (if you charge 100€ a night is really good, most djs don't make this money) but on the other hand is 100 clean €

In Belgium and the Netherlands (not sure!) I think the law is that it is "legal", well not exactly legal ofcourse - to download certain files (no software though like programs) and thus you cannot be charged for illegal downloading of music (in theory ...). Sharing this downloaded files like uploading it or giving it to friends / family is illegal and you will be charged for it.

I think it's alright if you download illegaly as long as its for home listening
If you're making money DJing, it's just not ok NOT to pay for your music.
Same goes for producers, if you're using the program just for hobby - I think it's ok to download it from torrents and such, but if you make money from royalties, well....its just wrong.

Im posting it from mobile : p
Illusion you are absolutely right - if you dont use music/soft commercialy, piracy isnt really bad, because its impossible to pay 2,5usd per each song if you have 1 or 2k of them.
Do you remember poll about a kind of subscription at trance.nu? IMO its quite good idea, a lot of us could pay 5 or even 10usd per month and download music without any limits.

Ya I think it's like that also here in the Netherlands.
But the world is busy with illegal downloading.. but it's not going fast :')
Limewire is gone now, but Piratebay (Torrentz) is stíll online (wich I like very much, haha).

And it's not only unfair to mix live with illegal downloaded tracks, it's also illegal and it can cost you all the tracks + a looot of money. Some DJ teacher once told me that Gigi D'Agostino once was caught cause of playing illegal downloaded tracks, lost all his music and payed a lot of money.

A woman found guilty and for 24 songs and owes $1.5 million. People are gone crazy... Most of the people out there download their songs illegally.

I think it's both illegal. Uploading and downloading without paying for it.
